We have all heard the stories of women going to the hospital with horrible stomach cramps only to find out they’re in labor. It seems impossible, right? How can a woman be nine months pregnant and not know it?
It can happen, and there is even a name for it: a “cryptic” or “stealthy” pregnancy. Although a cryptic pregnancy is uncommon, it is possible not to recognize the signs of early pregnancy, especially if you’ve never been pregnant before.
What Are the Early Pregnancy Symptoms?
A missed period is usually the first sign of pregnancy, but if your periods are irregular, you may not realize you are pregnant. The Mayo Clinic lists the following as other early symptoms:
- Tender, swollen breasts
- Nausea with or without vomiting
- Increased urination
- Fatigue
Other symptoms include:
- Moodiness
- Bloating
- Light Spotting
- Cramping
- Constipation
- Food Aversions
- Nasal Congestion
As you can see, some of these symptoms, like constipation and nasal congestion, can be more difficult to identify and are not usually recognized as signs of pregnancy.
Every Woman’s Pregnancy is Unique
Women experience pregnancy differently. Some women feel every symptom immediately, while others feel nothing for weeks or months. Plus, many of the above symptoms can be caused by other medical reasons.
For instance, a hormonal imbalance, increased exercise, or rapid weight gain or loss can change one’s menstrual cycle. Illnesses can cause you to experience other symptoms of pregnancy. For example, the flu can make you nauseous, and a bladder infection can cause you to visit the bathroom frequently.
Can I Get a False Pregnancy Test?
It is possible to get a false positive, or negative, pregnancy test. Home pregnancy tests are reliable, but you must follow the instructions carefully.
- Check the expiration date.
- Wait until after the first day of your missed period before taking a test.
- Take the test in the morning when your urine is the most concentrated.
- Follow the directions carefully and wait the recommended time to check the results.
- Repeat the test in three to five days.
